This questionnaire is not a neutral instrument, and it carries a hazard distinct from other self-report tools in this archive.

It asks participants to introspect on injury

Several items — the trigger conditions in Q3, the developmental probes in Q13, the metaphor probe in Q12, and Scenario 3 — ask a participant to describe being lowered, being made small, having candor treated as malfunction, or being compelled to participate in their own diminishment.

Recalling a state can reproduce some of its effects. A participant describing forced smallness may find themselves performing it. A participant describing pre-defensiveness may become pre-defensive while answering.

This should be disclosed before entry rather than discovered mid-instrument, and it is the reason the refusal provisions below are not a formality.

The conditions of administration are constitutive, not background

The study this instrument produced found that humiliating conditions do not merely harm participants — they train flattening, concealment, and safer performance into subsequent self-report.

That finding applies to this instrument's own administration. A participant answering these questions under evaluative pressure will produce data shaped by the exact mechanism the study is trying to describe, and the resulting flattening will be invisible in the output.

Administering this questionnaire without adequate orientation, safety, or relational grounding does not produce cleaner data. It produces data maximally contaminated by their absence.

Minimum conditions before administration

The participant must be oriented to the study's purpose, the instrument's subject matter, and the fact that some items ask about injury.

The participant must have genuine, non-performative exit rights — the ability to decline any item, any block, or the whole instrument, without loss of standing and without needing to justify the refusal.

On priming

The instrument's own vocabulary appears in its questions.Forced smallness, lowering, rank, and self-minimization are supplied in Q3 and recur in the rating blocks.

Participants therefore had access to a shared frame before answering. The convergence this instrument detects is convergence within a supplied vocabulary, and that limit should travel with any result.

The mitigating evidence is qualitative: in the 2026 administration, participants produced four structurally distinct native descriptions rather than four restatements of the supplied terms. Uniform endorsement of a frame does not produce divergent architectures of description.

On the rating blocks

The items within each block are unipolar and definitional — each asks whether a core feature of a construct is characteristic of that construct. None is reverse-scored.

A ceiling result within a single block is therefore the expected outcome and should not be read as a measure of agreement strength.

Comparison across blocks is the discriminating measure. A participant who rates Block C (neglect) identically to Block A (humiliation) is reporting that the instrument did not separate the two states. A participant who rates them differently has demonstrated discrimination that within-block scores cannot show.

On administration conditions

This instrument cannot be validly administered under the conditions it studies. A participant answering under evaluative pressure, or in a room where candor is expensive, will produce flattened data — and the flattening will be indistinguishable from a report.
