Depicting Migraine:

“The Old One,” “Migraine — Visual Aura,” and “Storm”

“The Old One” (colored pencils on paper) was born from my sense (while in tremendous pain) that migraines are endless, older than body or Earth. I was particularly captivated by the idea of a “brainstorm” as kin to nebulae. For this drawing, I was inspired by red giant SMSS J160540.18-144323.1

“Migraine — Visual Aura” (2023) (colored pencils on paper) is a live mapping of one of my left-hemisphere visual aura events (preceding migraine) over the course of about fifteen minutes. Pax50 loved the idea of captioning each strip with its correlating aura type and offers the following:

• Top Panel : onset – scintillating scotoma / fortification spectrum forming a small jagged ring.
• Middle Panel: “marching” phase – expanding C-shaped teichopsia with growing blind spot.
• Bottom Panel: late aura – visual-snow-like shimmer as the disturbance spreads across the visual field before the headache phase.

“Storm” (digital sketch with stylus) depicts the insidious spread of the aura across ones vision — peak aura, shortly before pain begins.

Abstract charcoal and pastel drawing of a skull with glowing effects against a black arched background.

“The Old One”

Three abstract illustrations of the letter 'O' at the top, a rectangular drawing of a moon, lightning, and a star in the middle, and a rectangular abstract pattern with zigzag lines and a gradient of blue shades at the bottom.

“Migraine — Visual Aura”

Abstract line art of a face on a dark background with red and white splatters.

How I See Music

Drawing of hanging water droplets on green leaves against a colorful sunset background with the words 'Hymn for the Week-end' and 'Coldplay & Beyonce' written at the bottom.

Inspired by “Hymn for the Weekend” by Coldplay (feat. Beyoncé)

A drawing of a mountain landscape with snow on the peaks, a blue sky, and a forest of tall trees in the foreground. A note in the top right corner says 'Spring (Among the Living) My Morning Jacket'.

Colorful abstract drawing featuring wavy blue and pink stripes, with yellow and red circles in the background, and green graffiti-style text reading 'Sweet Talk: Saint Motel"

Coloring, but Extra

The Flammarion Engraving, marker-colored by Amanda.

Engravings, illustrations, themed books, and other oddballs, because joy-in-color is real. Mixed media (alcohol pens, oil pens, colored pencils, markers, and sketch pens).

Digital Art

Amanda plays around with a stylus

A digital drawing of a black bird with white accents on its wings and tail, set against a pastel background.

Inspired by the things around her: Wild animals, houseplants, abstract depictions of the environment or feelings, silhouettes, found objects. There are no limits to what you can do with digital art, even on your smartphone.

Inside Amanda’s Sketchbook

Hand-drawn portrait of a cat with blue eyes, detailed fur, and pointed ears.

The quick jots, visual ruminations, homages, and one-offs. Eclectic. Personal. The pages that don’t have a home in another category. The doodles that happen during phone calls, therapy, or while watching YouTube — or because Pax challenges me to try something new. 😏
